Leaving Home and Checking Out

During Eon Zen’s March sesshin, Gyodo Sensei contrasts being trapped in the samsaric cycle of desire, as in the Eagle's song Hotel California “you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave," with the awakened life as expressed by Hakuin’s Song of Zazen: "in going and returning, we never leave home.” True value is not transactional. Instead of checking out, we check IN to embodied reality with attention, respect, and appreciation. "The gateway to freedom is zazen Samadhi,” which includes and gives rise to "observing the precepts, repentance, and giving, countless good deeds and the way of right living." Here, we find our true home — the divine abodes of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. A living home of mutual service with each other and all beings.
