The Koan of Illness

Illness, the second of the four universal sufferings, can include physical illness, mental illness, exhaustion, injury, and even troubled relationships, communities, or systems. When we view illness as a koan, it reveals the conditions we've placed on life to feel ok, such as requiring a healthy body, clear mind, or a supported life and secure future. In this talk, Gyodo Sensei shares three koans from our traditional curriculum that encourage us to meet the reality of illness wholeheartedly by letting go of our preferences and realizing our eternal Buddha nature and the changing condition without denying either, and to see “the whole world is medicine.”
