The Harmony of No Mind
Suzuki Roshi said “If you really want to know what precepts are, you should concentrate on what you do” in harmony with your surroundings, without seeking for anything inside or outside. True harmony - the harmony of no mind - flows in intimate participation with all conditions without clinging to or resisting reality based on our ideas or judgments. Letting go of our need for external validation or conceptual understanding, we can feel this internal harmonious coherence in every moment and let that be our guide. As Zen poet Ryokan expresses: “With no mind, flowers lure the butterfly; With no mind, the butterfly visits the blossoms. Yet when flowers bloom, the butterfly comes; When the butterfly comes, the flowers bloom.”
