Traces of the Buddha

In this talk, Gyodo Sensei explores two lines from Master Dogen’s Genjokoan, "There is a trace of realization that cannot be grasped. We endlessly express the ungraspable trace of realization.” What is this trace?

Often we think of traces as attachments. Master Rinzai even says “This person of the Way who is now listening to the dharma acts in a manner that leaves no traces.” But the Blue Cliff Record Case 53, “Flown Away” points to the realization that everything is always right here, right now. When am I leaving a trace, through my karma, my attachments, and what are the traces of the Buddha?
